Party All Over Europe with EURO 2020

07 Oct 2019

For the first time in recent years, the UEFA European Championship is to be held in several different cities across Europe. These major cities embody the diversity of culture in Europe and all offer a brilliant range of things to do, see and eat. If you are fortunate enough to have a ticket to the final, semi-finals or quarter-finals, then these are some of the ways you can spend your free time outside of the stadium.

Baku

While Baku is arguably one of the lesser-known cities to be hosting Euro 2020, it can more than hold its own against its more famous co-hosts. Fire is very important to Azerbaijani culture, and so the three skyscrapers known as the Flame Towers were designed to look like flames. They light up the skyline at night in a choreographed lights show; a must see during your time in Baku. The historical centre, which is home to the impressive Maiden’s Tower and UNESCO world heritage site, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, is a great place to explore in the city.  This up-and-coming tourist destination offers a truly unique travel experience; its blend of historical and cutting edge architecture is a joy to explore.

London

The semi-finals and final match of the UEFA EURO 2020 are to be held in London. A few days spent in the capital of the UK can stretch an awfully long way; the historical sites are endless, from Big Ben to Buckingham Palace to the Tower of London. Or perhaps spend your free time exploring some of London’s famous markets? The food and shopping possibilities are endless at the alternative Camden Market or historical Greenwich Market. And if the final goes your way there are infinite nightlife options with which to celebrate; grungy pubs, classy wine bars and booming nightclubs to name but a few.

Rome

Known as the Eternal City, Rome is one of the best places in Europe in which to soak up history, culture and, of course, food. The city is home to numerous treasures dating back to the Roman Empire, including the Roman Forum, the Pantheon and one of the wonders of the modern world; the Colosseum. Rome will host the opening match of Euro 2020 and inaugural concert in Colosseum. The opening ceremonies for the Euro 2020 football championship will take place in Rome whose Olympic Stadium will host three Group A matches and a quarter final. Besides live football matches, don’t leave without trying some of the local pizza, pasta and gelato. If you are rooting for a team at Euro 2020, be sure to make a wish at the glorious Trevi Fountain – it might help them win!

Munich

Where better to celebrate a win than the beer halls of Munich? This German city has much more to offer beyond its cuisine and beer, though the beer is excellent and the cuisine is great too! Make sure to get your hands on a pretzel and some local wurst. Among the local sites to see when you are not at the match, Marienplatz has to be high on your list; the city’s main square is home to some beautiful architecture like the New Town Hall, and the Marian column, atop which sits a gold statue of St Mary the Virgin.

St Petersburg

St Petersburg is a city packed full of interesting things to do that you simply will not find in other parts of Europe, which makes it a perfect host for the multi-city Euro 2020. The city is a treasure trove for stunning, historical buildings like the Peterhof Palace, the Hermitage Museum and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, which is known for its distinctive colourful domes. The city is traversed by canals, which makes it a prime location for a relaxing boat cruise. For those looking for a bit more excitement, the local banyas (bath houses) have invigorating birch tree massages on offer and the nightlife is crazy; ryumochnayas (bars) offer beer by the bottle or vodka by the shot. Dumskaya is a particularly rowdy street full of heaving bars for those wanting to celebrate their team’s win!
